State Sen. Wayne Schmidt (R-Grand Traverse) has been named Michigan Community Action’s (MCA) “2017 Legislator of the Year” for his contributions to his local agency, Northwest Michigan Community Action Agency (NMCAA), which serves 10 counties in the 37th District.
Sen. Schmidt is a participant at many NMCAA events, such as Head Start programs, which serve more than 34 million children statewide. NMCAA serves Antrim, Benzie, Charlevoix, Emmet, Grand Traverse, Kalkaska, Leelanau, Missaukee, Roscommon and Wexford counties.
“Sen. Schmidt is committed to changing the lives of Michigan families and kids,” says Kate White, MCA executive director. “We appreciate his longtime support of community action efforts in Michigan.”
Schmidt serves as chair of the Senate Commerce Committee, vice-chair of Economic Development and International Investment and is a member of the Agriculture, Insurance, Outdoor Recreation and Tourism and Legislative Council committees. He is a former state representative.
Prior to serving in the state legislature, Schmidt was elected five times to the Grand Traverse County Board of Commissioners and served as chair and vice-chair.
