Lansing Chamber Releases Statement on Stay-at-home Order
The Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce release an official statement Monday afternoon in response to Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s issuance earlier in the day of a stay-at-home order.
“We understand the significant economic impact to many businesses and employees by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s recently announced stay-at-home executive order,” Tim Daman, chamber president and CEO, said in the news release. “However, the Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce believes the public health and safety of our residents should remain a top priority in reducing the widespread exposure to COVID-19.
“We continue to encourage the tri-county region to support local businesses as much as possible. Now, more than ever, we need to shop local and buy items online from local stores as well as order delivery and carryout from our favorite restaurants. It’s essential to their survival,” he continued. “We must all be willing to adhere to the state’s recommendations to ensure we can get through this situation swiftly and minimize its detrimental health and economic impact as much as possible.”
Whitmer signed the “Stay Home, Stay Safe” executive order Monday morning. The order directs all noncritical businesses to temporarily close and all Michiganders to stay home or 6 feet away from others during the COVID-19 crisis. The order takes effect at 12:01 a.m. Tuesday and will last for at least the next three weeks.
Grocery stores, pharmacies and gas stations will remain open. Carryout and delivery from businesses are still allowed.
The chamber is asking business owner seeking clarification on whether their business is essential to visit Michigan.gov/coronavirus or contact Steve Japinga, then chamber’s vice president of public affairs, at firstname.lastname@example.org.
The Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce is asking members to take a short survey to better help the chamber gain an accurate and ongoing assessment and impact of this situation on the Lansing region.
