Pagan to lead Progressive Women’s Caucus
The Progressive Women’s Caucus has selected state Rep. Kristy Pagan to serve as chair of the caucus.
The Canton Democrat is serving her third term in the Michigan House. She previously served as leader of the Progressive Women’s Caucus’ Gender Violence and Women’s Health task forces and was legislative co-chair of former first lady Sue Snyder’s End Campus Sexual Assault Summit.
Pagan spearheaded bipartisan legislation in the House to address domestic and sexual assault. In her role as a member of the House Appropriations Committee, Pagan also helped secure more funding for sexual assault survivors in the state budget.
“As we celebrate reaching the largest numbers of Democratic women elected to office in our state’s history, we must also remain steadfast in leading with purpose,” Pagan said in a news release. “With this new responsibility comes a laser focus on uplifting women and our families through progressive policy-making, collaboration with both legislative chambers and a strong partnership with Gov. (Gretchen) Whitmer.
“From fully funding our schools to closing the pay gap, and increasing access to reproductive health care and economic security, women must be at the table to make a difference,” she added.
Joining Pagan on the caucus executive committee are Rep. Kyra Bolden, D-Southfield, as vice chair; Rep. Rachel Hood, D-Grand Rapids, as secretary; Rep. Mari Manoogian, D-Birmingham, as treasurer; and state Sen. Stephanie Chang, D-Detroit, as immediate past chair.
Prior to election to the state House, Pagan served as chair of the Women’s Information Network, a pro-choice Democratic women’s networking organization in Washington, D.C. She also was a legislative aide to U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow, D-Lansing, Michigan’s first female elected to the U.S. Senate.
The Progressive Women’s Caucus works to support and promote forward-thinking women serving in the Michigan Legislature, provide professional development and networking opportunities for progressive women, and take a proactive approach in ending all oppression through leadership and the policy-making process.
