Michigan building operators could qualify for energy discount

Public and nonprofit building operators could qualify for a $400 discount or attending building operator certification classes this year, according to the Michigan Energy Office (MEO).

In addition to the discount, participants may also qualify for utility rebates and a veteran discount. The goal of the certification class is to achieve more energy savings in public and nonprofit buildings by reducing energy waste.

“Last year, 21 individuals were trained in Michigan, thanks to financial assistance from MEO,” said MEO Director Robert Jackson. “To build on that success, MEO is offering discounts for public building operators to attend classes in Michigan in 2019. Facilities operated by (building operator certification) graduates are proven to save energy, have lower energy bills and offer improved comfort for occupants. We encourage public building operators who work in Michigan to take the class and take advantage of the discount.”

The Level 1 class will take place in Kalamazoo beginning in March, in Flint starting in May and in Escanaba beginning in July. The Level 2 class will be held at the Consumers Energy Training Center in Okemos in September.

In addition, Consumers Energy is offering for supplemental classes to building operator certification graduates who are seeing annual maintenance points.

Participants must pass a test at the end of each training day and complete assigned projects. Classes begin at 8 a.m. and end at 4 p.m. The Energy Office recommends early registration.

For more information on the classes and online registration visit www.boccentral.org/training/michigan.

To be eligible for the $400 discount, participants cannot receive more than $1,150 from other parties.

Anyone interested in the energy discount should email Karin Gredvig at kgredvig@mwalliance.org. The Midwest Energy Efficiency Alliance administers the building operator certification programs across the Midwest.
