Online presence is a must for small businesses

Every business, no matter how small, should have a website, according to hotjar.com. That’s because most Americans prefer online shopping – a number that is only going to get bigger with Generation Z becoming an economic force.

Despite the growing trend of making purchases online, 46 percent of small businesses do not have a website, and 35 percent believe their operation is too small to have a website.

Even if a small business has a website, it might not be enough. Hotjar said customers expect a mobile-friendly site so they can make purchases while using their smart phones.

Some things to keep in mind as you decide how simple – or complicated – your website will be:

If your site does not load in four seconds (the target time is 500 milliseconds), a quarter of customers who arrived at your website will have left. So important is the mobile experience that 85 percent of people believe a company’s mobile website should be as good or better than their desktop site. If the page is slow in loading or isn’t easy to navigate, 88 percent of online customers are less likely to return to a website.

And even in a time when communication is instant, word of mouth matters. Fifty-seven percent of users said they will not recommend a business with a badly designed mobile site.

In the end, you online presence could make or break your small business success.
