Construction of Downtown Grocery, Hotel set to Begin Spring 2019

It has been an exciting year for downtown Lansing, with the announcements of several development projects that will bring economic growth, a population increase and walkability within the region. Among them apartments, commercial and retail space.

In August, Gillespie Group of Lansing announced its plans for the 600 block on the corner of East Michigan Avenue and Larch Street. Those plans include a grocery store and a hotel, both part of a mixed-use development that is expected to open sometime in 2020.

The $41 million development is close to breaking ground now that the Lansing City Council has approved a $10.4 million brownfield plan for the project. In fact, work on the property could start as early as March.

But there is still work to be done. The site requires significant cleanup due to tanks underground filled with petroleum, along with existing properties on the development site that have lead paint and asbestos. Gillespie Group is also waiting for the go-ahead from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC), and the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ).

If remaining approvals come in on pace and environmental remediation of the issues on the site go as planned, the public can expect to be shopping in the new grocery store by September 1, 2020.

There are also other businesses keen on seeing the success of the project, as developer Pat Gillespie has taken phone calls since the approval from entrepreneurs who want to bring their businesses to the area.
