LOCAL DOCTORS TO SERVE SYRIAN REFUGEES
This weekend, Lansing-area doctors Ahmed El-Sanhouri and his wife Dr. Aya Zaky will join a team of over 100 physicians, surgeons, nurses, medical students, and translators in providing vital medical care to Syrian refugees living in Jordan, as well as underserved Jordanians from July 7-12. The primary and secondary health care is expected to impact thousands in need.
El-Sanhouri is a retina specialist at L.O. Eyecare, Zaky is a dentist at Michigan Community Dental Clinics. The couple will travel with the Syrian American Medical Society (SAMS), a non-political, nonprofit medical relief organization that provides services on the front lines of crisis relief in Syria and neighboring countries with a goal of alleviating suffering and saving lives.
“For seven years, refugees from Syria have sought safety and care in neighboring countries,” Dr. El-Sanhouri said. “There are nearly 1 million refugees in Jordan. Many live well below the poverty line and cannot get the healthcare they need. My wife and I are participating in the mission trip to do our part to support ongoing medical relief programs.”
Medical teams plan to focus on surgical specialties during the trip, including ophthalmology, interventional cardiology and reconstructive surgery. Patients will also be provided pediatric dental care and women’s health services by the group. The mission will be led by Michigan based general practitioner, Dr. Hend Azhary.
Drs. El-Sanhouri and Zaky are joining the SAMS in their efforts to cover costs related to the trip. Each dollar raised will go directly towards essential patient-care items, such as medication and equipment. The donation website shows a goal of $5,000.00.
