EATON RAPIDS AMONG SIX PARTICIPANTS IN MICHIGAN MAIN STREET PROGRAM

Numerous studies show that investments in downtowns create vibrant, healthy communities and boost the economic strength of the state. Six communities in Michigan will participate in the Michigan Main Street Program, a program whose goal is to help create sustainable and unique places. The six communities include Eaton Rapids, Cheboygan, Dearborn, Dundee, Kalkaska and Flat Rock.

The cohort will participate in the Engaged Level, which provides strategies for establishing a local Main Street organization as well as communication strategies for building broad-based support for a local effort. Communities will also learn the benefits and requirements of the program to advance to the Select Level. A community has up to three years to participate as an Engaged community, working to implement their plans and apply to the Select Level.

“Michigan’s economy will only thrive if our downtowns are healthy and vibrant,” said Jeff Mason, CEO of the Michigan Economic Development Corporation. “The Michigan Main Street program creates opportunities for development and economic growth in downtowns across our state.”

The communities will officially be recognized as the Engaged Level once they participate in the Main Street Training Series, as well as once they develop communications and fund-development plans. Eaton Rapids, as well as the others listed, have already completed the initial training series. Over this next year, Michigan Main Street staff will work with each community to develop ways to foster the support needed to have a successful program.

“Our interactive training gives Main Street communities the tools they need to create engaging places for residents and visitors to enjoy,” said Laura Krizov, manager of Michigan Main Street. “We focus on implementing the Main Street Approach™ to help the communities create a place that celebrates the unique assets of the area.”
