As part of their newly initiated Mechatronics Apprenticeship program, MS Plastic Welders LLC welcomed their first apprentices this past fall. The program, in collaboration with Lansing Community College, has been certified by the U.S. Department of Labor.

The Webberville, Michigan company plans to hire 2-3 new apprentices each year. Tuition and fees for the program are paid by MS Plastic Welders, as well as a working wage predetermined to increase on a semi-annual basis.

According to the Center for American Progress at, “Apprenticeship is a proven worker-training strategy that combines on-the-job training with classroom instruction but is proven underused in the United States. For workers, apprenticeship means a real job that leads to a credential that is valued in the labor market. Apprentices are paid for their time spent on the job, accumulate little to no student debt, and are generally retained once they have successfully completed their programs.”

The four-year program offers the apprentices intense on the job training in mechanical, electrical and programming applications. Courses of study include mathematics, technical, safety and communication, among others.

“A continuous investment in apprentices is the key to close the gap of lacking a skilled workforce in Michigan”, said Dirk Bareis, vice president of MS Plastic Welders. “This program will strengthen our competitive position and support our continuous growth strategy. It underlines the necessity of higher technical knowledge to ensure local growth.”
