Lansing Regional Chamber Hosts Award-Winning Editor Ron Fournier

Presented by the Mid-Michigan Business Travel Coalition (Mid-Michigan BTC), the Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce (LRCC) hosted its final 2017 Economic Club meeting at the Kellogg Hotel & Conference Center last week on Dec. 12. Ron Fournier, publisher and editor at Crain’s Detroit Business, was the featured speaker at Tuesday’s luncheon.

A prolific writer, Fournier has previously served as the Washington bureau chief for the Associated Press during the Clinton, Bush and Obama presidencies; the editor-in-chief for the National Journal; and a columnist for the Atlantic. Audience members received a host of pivotal considerations from the guest speaker, including what he’s learned personally over the course of several U.S. administrations.

“What have I learned from the presidents? Don’t be afraid to change yourself — disrupt yourself — know your audience and every election is going to be a change election, until we actually change the system … until we stop using change as a political slogan,” Fournier said.

Fournier concluded the luncheon with optimism for the future, including how future political leaders and technologies will only make us stronger — if self-awareness and correcting our current shortcomings remain top of mind.

“I think we’re going to figure this out, and I think especially this millennial generation is going to figure this out, but it’s not going to happen on its own,” said Fournier. “We have to start looking at how these institutions are going to adapt.”

Opening remarks were made by Vic Verchereau, vice president of marketing at Farm Bureau Insurance, and were followed by remarks from Jim Robinson, chair of Mid-Michigan BTC’s board of directors and Michael J. Cole, associate attorney at Fahey, Schultz, Burzych, Rhodes PLC (FSBR Lawyers).

The day’s presenting sponsor was the Capital Region International Airport, with distinguished sponsors including FSBR Lawyers, McLaren Greater Lansing, Dewpoint, Huntington Bank, Consumers Energy and more.

The Economic Club provides members with an excellent opportunity to network with more than 400 of the area’s key community, business and education leaders, and decision makers; the 2018 slate will kick off Jan. 23 with Dr. Thomas J. Holt from Michigan State University’s School of Criminal Justice. To learn more, please visit lansingchamber.org.
