American Airlines and Capital Region International: New direct routes from LAN to DCA

Aside from the exciting new partnership, the Airport was pleased to announce the new services that American Airlines will offer to Lansing residents: daily, nonstop service from the Capital City to the nation’s Capital, Washington D.C.

Mark Tochman, American Airlines corporate sales manager, noted that approving new routes is a difficult process, but that he and the airline were excited to make it happen.

“Right from the start our folks at American were excited about these new routes and the partnership,” said Tochman at the event on Monday.

The new routes will begin taking off on July 5 and are expected to stimulate business, grow tourism and ease travel for Lansing and the surrounding area.

American Airline’s new service will depart LAN at 6:30 a.m. and arrive in DCA at 8:04 a.m., then depart from DCA at 5 p.m. and arrive back at LAN at 6:53 p.m. on weekdays and Sundays. A shorter, modified schedule will be available on Saturdays, departing from LAN at 9:05 a.m. and arriving in DCA at 10:39 a.m., then departing DCA at 3:20 p.m. and arriving at LAN at 5:10 p.m.

Flights on these new routes will be operated by a Bombardier CRJ-700 aircraft, a smaller plane that Tochman described as having a more “private jet” type of feel. According to American Airlines, they are investing $3 billion into the customer service on these flights by adding features like extra all-aisle access, international Wi-Fi and more.

The event last Monday was well attended by leaders in the Lansing area, many of who reiterated the support of the community on this decision. Tim Daman, president and CEO of the Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce, noted that they had received 1,200 letters of support for this transition and that securing this for Michigan businesses is essential for economic development.

“Lansing is vital for the state of Michigan, and vital Lansing needs a vital airport,” said Daman.

The combined presence of American Airlines in Lansing as well as the new routes are expected to have a $16 million dollar impact on the community, with no exact numbers on jobs currently. Looking to the future, the Airline also announced that in August, American Airlines will launch service between Lansing and Chicago O’Hare.
